Build a design portfolio that tells the story

A strong design portfolio helps someone understand how you approach a problem. Choose a small number of projects that reflect the work you want to do, rather than collecting every exercise you have completed.

For each project, explain the brief and intended audience. Show the visual direction and describe why you chose the layout, typography or colour system. Keep the explanation concise so the work remains easy to scan.

Independent projects can be useful when you are starting out. Label them clearly as concepts and avoid inventing a client or business results. Honest context makes the portfolio more credible.

Use mockups to demonstrate how the design works in its intended setting, but include a clean view of the actual artwork as well. Make sure text, logos and images remain legible rather than relying on dramatic angles.

End with a clear description of your role, deliverables and tools. Review your portfolio regularly as your skills improve. The aim is to make your thinking and capabilities understandable, not to promise outcomes you cannot substantiate.
